Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy, or TPLO, is a surgery that is commonly performed on medium to large breed dogs suffering from injury, or tear, of the cranial cruciate ligament. This surgery changes the angle of the tibial plateau, alleviating abnormal movement of the tibia that causes pain and discomfort.
What is the Cranial Cruciate Ligament?
The cranial cruciate ligament is responsible for resisting abnormal movement of the tibia during normal movement of the knee. This ligament remains under constant pressure and is prone to degeneration, which can lead to rupture. When ruptured, the knee joint becomes unstable and there is abnormal movement of the tibia in relation to the femur. This abnormal movement leads to pain and eventually degenerative changes in the joint.
Request an AppointmentGoal of the Surgery:
The goal of the TPLO surgery is to alter the angle of the tibial plateau, which changes the biomechanics of the knee. This results in the cranial cruciate ligament no longer being needed for stability of the knee. This improves overall function of the knee and alleviates pain during movement.
Recovery:
Following surgery, pets will require a period of strict exercise restriction and physical therapy to assist in a full recovery. Each pet’s recovery time will vary, but majority of pets recovery very well shortly after surgery.
